Employment Authorization – Form I-765
Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, is the form individuals file with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to request permission to work legally in the United States.
If approved, the applicant receives an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), sometimes referred to as a “work permit.” An EAD shows that the holder is authorized to work in the U.S. for a specific period of time.
Many people eligible to file Form I-765 include those who have pending immigration applications (such as Adjustment of Status), certain visas that allow work authorization, or other humanitarian or employment-based classifications.
The EAD does not grant any immigration status on its own, but it allows the recipient to legally work in the U.S. while their underlying case is pending or under an eligible category.
